Jensen Seeds A/S is an independent privately owned seed production company founded in
1962 and since 1967 located in Birkum near Odense.
Our main objective is to be the competent and reliable supplier to the seed industry of high quality custom seed production of vegetable, flower and herbs.
In order to achieve and maintain this goal the company continuously expand its production area and capacity using the highest and newest technology withing the industry.
JENSEN SEEDS' HISTORY:
It all began with Chr. Olsen, Frøavl- og Frøhandel A/S, which was founded as a garden seed company on December 1st 1862 by Chr. Olsen (b. 1842, d. 1914).
In 1902, the company was taken over by his sons, Chr. Olsen (b. 1870, d. 1943) and Axel Olsen (b. 1872, d. 1948).In 1919, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company with the two sons as directors until respectively 1943 and 1948. In 1936 Chr. Olsen's son, Chr. Børge Olsen (b. 1906) joined the Executive Board, and from 1948, he was the sole director. Domicile: Vandværksvej 18-20, Odense. The experimental farm 'Kristinelyst', belonging to Chr. Olsen, was located in Odense.Chr. Børge Olsen closed down the family business in 1962 - the same year that the company’s 100 year jubilee. He moved to Tønder to live near his daughter Karin Grete (b. 1937), who was married to Lensgreve Hans Schack. They had no children, and the castle was given away as a gift to Denmark’s Prince Joachim. Prince Joachim took over ‘Schackenborg’ in 1993, when he and Karin Schack moved permanently to Alsace in France.
Paul Jensen started his career in 1950 at Chr. Børge Olsen. The first 2 years were he worked in the office and from 1952 to 1962 he worked as a seed production consultant. After Chr. Børge Olsen's closure of the company, Paul Jensen started up his own seed production company on a farm, and took over a part of the customers. After 5 years (1967) he relocated the company to Labirksgyden 12, Birkum, Odense, where he bought 5 ha land.Here he built the first building and subsequently every 5. year a new one was build.
Henning van Veldhuizen was employed in March 1986.In 1992, he took over the company, together with Paul Jensen's daughter, Kirsten.The company is still owned by the 2 and is today a well-consolidated and modern seed production company, that can celebrate its 50 year anniversary on 10. May 2012.The company has, according to the above, its roots 150 years back in time.
Henning van Veldhuizen (born 1954) has served 35 years in the seed industry. He started his career with the Dutch seed company Royal Sluis in Enkhuizen. Henning van Veldhuizen has now been with Jensen Seeds for more than 25 years, of which the last 20 years as the main shareholder and Managing Director. During his leadership, company name is changed to Jensen Seeds A/S.
Today Jensen Seeds A/S is Denmark's largest garden seed production company with more than 3300 ha garden seed production, exporting approximately 4000 tonnes of garden seed annually and has a turnover, depending on the year’s conditions, at 100 million DKK. The company has today 21 competent employees employed.
